Now showing at the Film Archive is Still, an exhibition featuring work by Melissa Irving, Marie Shannon, Murray Hewitt, John Lake and Daniel von Sturmer, and curated by Jenny Gillam and Eugene Hansen. Still is the first of four exhibitions in the Archive's new Curator at Large programme.
In Still artists have produced work using a video camera in a fixed point of view. Wide ranging in scope, from the formal and minimal to political documentary, the exhibition includes performance made for video works that consciously critique the cinematic or photographic record, and works by photographers who might instinctively use the video camera in this way.
In 2012 the Archive appointed Jenny and Eugene as the inaugural curators for the Curator at Large programme. Throughout the year Jenny and Eugene will curate four exhibitions exploring the Film Archive's collections, along with current themes and approaches to video art by emerging and established New Zealand artists.
